We have a rigorous programme of spelling teaching at Mill Rythe. Spelling sessions are based around the rule or pattern identified for that week on the medium term overviews. This session includes teaching, with additional activities to support children to consolidate their learning.
In addition to the weekly spelling session, it is expected that teachers routinely identify tier 2 words that many children are misspelling across the curriculum. These should be focussed on and practised regularly throughout the day/ week and then tested.
Spelling Bees
There are three Spelling Bees for children to complete each year in order to encourage them to learn to spell common exception words and words from the statutory spelling lists from the National Curriculum. It is expected that a child will learn a booklet each term and they are tested by a member of staff by reciting the spellings aloud or writing them down. There is a small prize for each booklet completed, with an entry into a draw to win £50 of Mr Bessant’s hard-earned money if they complete all three Spelling Bees!
